Alvin’s Premier Hardware Store (:57)

This cash register was purchased new for the Hadley Hardware Co. in 1912.  The store became Dotson Hardware and eventually Dewitt Hardware.  In spite of being over 100 years old, it still works. It has lots of counters, including the number of customers. Note that it would only allow input of $99.99. If a purchase was larger, it would be rung up multiple times. The drawers would allow for multiple departments or salesmen.

We believe the calculating scale was originally purchased for the Dewitt Grocery Store. It was later used in their hardware store to weigh nails etc.  The weight was displayed in the center and using columns on each side corresponding to the price per pound, it would display how much to charge for the purchase.
