Old 300 (:22)
The original plat of the city of Alvin was generated in 1887 by George Durant and Lee Slataper. The streets running north and south in the old section of town are named for Confederate generals – Gordon, Hill, Lee, etc. Those running east and west are named for business people in Galveston, mainly railroad – Sealy, Willis, etc. To encourage people to come and settle in Alvin, early real estate ads from the 1800s advertised the Alvin area as “The Land of Fruits and Flowers.”
