1900 & 1915 Storms (:40)

At the time of the 1900 storm there were about 300 houses in Alvin and all but 14 were destroyed or knocked off their foundations. A cotton barge was blown inland about 5 miles and using horses and timbers it took a month to drag it back to Halls Bayou. The 1915 hurricane was a stronger storm but did less damage; Galveston Island had been built up and the construction of homes had improved to withstand the winds. Please note the various first-person accounts in the exhibit. Many Alvin homes were built from the driftwood generated by the 1900 storm.
